SQL DBA/ SSIS Developer

PURPOSE OF THE FUNCTION DBAs use specialized software to store and organize data. The role includes capacity planning, installation, configuration, migration, performance monitoring, security, troubleshooting, as well as backup and data recovery and general support of the databases. Role also requires deploying, supporting and troubleshooting of ETL and Reporting components POSITION DESCRIPTION (JOB SUMMARY) The candidate will be a member of a team within Data Management Services (DMS) called Database Services Client. The primary role on the team will be as a SQL Server Database Administrator supporting various Canadian and US client applications, but the individual may be asked to take on additional duties including: infrastructure support and cross-training on other DBMS platforms. PRIMARY OBJECTIVES
  • Resolution of reported service requests, pro-active and reactive performance analysis related to databases
  • Carry out Database migrations, upgrades, patching and evaluation/roll out of new database related tools
  • Troubleshooting, monitoring and diagnose issues with SQL Server Database engine, SSIS, SSRS, SQL codes and highly customized jobs.
  • Adherence to documented standards and procedures while doing database related activities like change management.
RELATIONSHIPS REPORTS TO: Delivery Manager,DMS SUPERVISES: EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Servicing customers, partners INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS: Working with other team members, technical/team leads, management, specialized IT areas and application support teams to ensure consistent delivery and quality of database services. TASKS, DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support Areas
    • Database Administrative support of SQL Server versions 2008 2016: Monitoring, maintenance and housekeeping of SQL Server and Databases, SQL Jobs, User Access management and regular client requests. Writing and tuning SQL codes and highly customized jobs.
    • Infrastructure support of SQL Server versions 2008 2014: server/instance installs (stand-alone and clustered), service-pack upgrades, hot fixes, client tool installs, readiness programs, new feature exploitation, research and development.
    • BI support of SSIS and SSRS: Deployment, Security, performance tuning, Creating and enforcing Standards & best practices, automate repetitive tasks, designing, troubleshoot and diagnose issues with SSIS, SSRS.
  • Support of application and upgrade database (Database Migration/ upgrade) from existing SQL versions to latest SQL Server versions.
  • Incident Management: Knowledge of Incident management process and participation in a rotational on-call schedule to support off hours production incidents
  • Occasional participation in after-hours and weekend support of production implementations, infrastructure activities, and various disaster recovery exercises
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation and procedures for all supported applications and environments.
  • Maintaining 99.99% availability for all production environments.
  • Evaluation of functionality and features with newer versions of the SQL Server DBMS/ database related tools
  • Pro-active and reactive performance analysis, monitoring, troubleshooting and resolution of issues.
  • Monitoring and support of nightly production batch cycles (SQL Jobs and SSIS Packages).
  • Regular review of database maintenance/ support tasks and performance improvement procedures
  • Work Planning/Escalation: Organizing and monitoring personal workload and escalating to manager when issues arise
  • Continuous Improvement: Sharing ideas for process improvement and innovative solutions to known problems
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTITUDES
  • Intermediate Knowledge
    • SQL Server Concepts like SQL Architecture, Indexes, T-SQL skills & DMV.
    • Database Maintenance/ Support tasks and lower level monitoring using tools like profiler, DMV, Perfmon
    • SQL Server Replication, Backup/ Restore, maintenance plans and DR recovery strategies.
    • Troubleshooting & diagnose issues with both SSIS & SSRS (Deploy, design, Security, Tuning, Creating and enforcing Standards & best practices, automate)
    • Understanding of system tables, stored procedures, functions, triggers & SQL tuning
    • General troubleshooting like assisting clients with various issues related to connectivity, permissions, access, distributed queries issues, suggesting solutions, best practices etc.
    • SQL Server Security, adept in creating and maintain complex User and permission management environment using AD groups, DB roles, SQL ids and Proxy accounts.
      • Desirable to have
    • Knowledge of Performance Tuning by analyzing, optimizing and rewriting/re-designing SQL codes.
    • Knowledge of SQL Server database tuning using Profiler, Index Tuning Wizard, Dynamic Management Views and Functions (DMVs), and other third-party tools.
    • Hands-on experience with SQL Server installations and patching.
    • PowerShell scripting to automate DBA related tasks. Ability to understand existing automated tasks and tweak/troubleshoot them.
    • Some knowledge of data-mapping and logical and physical data modeling.
    • Knowledge of clustering, Always on / multi node clusters at the time of DR process.
    • Knowledge of AWS, Specifically, migration to AWS from in premise data center

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED DEGREE/ DEPLOMA IN: BE/ B. Tech /MCA / M. Tech / in Computer Science or related technology. PRIOR EXPERIENCE: Minimum 4 to 6 years of SQL Server database administration experience handling medium to large databases.
  • In SQL Server 2008- 2016 running on the Win Server 2008, 2012 operating system
GOOD TO HAVE: Basic knowledge of SSAS, CMD Shell Scripting/ FTP shares, VB script and .net/C# would be preferred.
Experience on SQL backup tools like power designer, DB artisan, Redgate. CERTIFICATIONS: MCSE or MCSA certified in SQL Server2012 or 2014 desirable ADDITIONAL COMMENTS/ INFORMATION
  • Working hours are 12:00 20:30 (GMT/UTC + 05:30 hour) with rotational (1 week/month) crossover shift 15:30 12:00 am to ensure proper crossover with onshore team members.
  • All team members must have the ability to handle 24x7 rotational on-call duties, after hour change support & disaster recovery support (will require cell phone, laptop & guaranteed coverage from home).
