We are seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead a talented geographically distributed engineering team to build a world class end-to-end AI/ML platform to scale up AI/ML solution development at PayPal and enable intelligent decision making in everything we do. The ideal candidate is customer-centric, strategic & analytical in decision making and laser-focused on executing at scale. You are passionate about building platforms at scale, cutting-edge technology, innovation, winning in the market and delivering on their commitments. You should have technical expertise and working experience in AI/ML to lead technical and data science discussions and guide cross-functional teams through functional definition, solution, and integration on large scale. You have a proven track record of leading, coaching and mentoring their teams to reach their highest potential.

PayPal AI/ML Platform is responsible for building the ML platform to help data scientists with the end-to-end model development lifecycle. We build state of the art and innovative ML infrastructure to support key product functions such as Fraud risk, Compliance, Personalization, Recommendations, Customer success, and other domains across PayPal.

Your day-to-day - In your day-to-day role, you will

• Lead and inspire a high-performing engineering team to build and scale a world class AI/ML platform to enable a standardized end-to-end model development and production lifecycle with delightful user experience. 
• Develop, continuously evolve the technical vision and roadmap of domain and product to meet the current and future business needs.
• Drive a results-oriented culture with a strong focus on engineering excellence, execution, and craftmanship as a Customer Champion
• Develop trusted partnership with business, product, data scientists and architecture leaders to drive optimized platform product delivery; Manage stakeholder planning and communications ensuring key outcomes.
• Recruit, coach, and mentor the best engineering and management talent.
• Design, lead, and evaluate system designs within the product domain and be a thought leader for your teams. 
• Anticipate and aggressively remove obstacles that slow down or prevent products and programs from delivering on product and program objectives. Balance urgent and effective action, commitment to excellence, and taking initiative to resolve problems; holds internal stakeholders accountable where appropriate.
• Strong communication, listening, interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills; able to convey important messages in a clear and compelling manner.
• Work with the engineers to set goals along with clear expectations based on their role aligning the broader organization’s goal. Provide regular feedback and coaching to the engineers by continuously evaluating their performance.
• Ensure best practices are adhered consistently by providing regular feedback and participating in code review sessions.

What do you need to bring -

• Solid track record of over-achieving engineering and platform delivery and scaling targets in high volume, innovative and fast-paced high-pressure environment; proven results in delivery on platform product
• Working experience in data & AI/ML field, including new and emerging technologies in Machine Learning/Deep Learning, Generative AI, and Big Data.
• 8+ years’ experience in software development with 3+ years technical leadership experience
• Experience building and developing engineering teams that exhibit strong ownership, user empathy, and engineering excellence. 
• Passion for leading and developing direct reports; providing guidance, coaching, and opportunities towards improving their personal and career growth.
• Excellent time management skills with ability to manage a large, diverse set of to-dos – vigorously prioritize, stay on top of multiple work streams, monitor progress, hold owners accountable.
• Communication style motivated by purposeful outcomes with experience interfacing with executives.
• Experience partnering closely with ML researchers.
• Experience building ML infrastructure or MLOps platforms or MDLC / Model training platforms.
• Experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go).
• Experience with big data technologies like Map Reduce, Spark, Hive, HDFS, etc.
• Experience with cloud providers like GCP, AWS, Azure and Kubernetes technologies.
• Experience with open-source technologies used in machine learning development tools like Kubeflow, Jupyter Notebook, Airflow, Argo, etc.
• Strong management skills for planning and executing complex multi-team projects.
