Manage project through technical proposals, estimation, staffing, planning, monitoring, reporting status, assuring quality, managing customer interaction and supervising technical staff to ensure requirement gathering & analysis, design, development, testing, delivery & installation, troubleshooting & support, documentation and release management.
  • Project Management :
  • 1. Initiate, then assign and facilitate, the elicitation, analysis, documentation and maintenance of customer requirements. (In some cases this exercise is an adjunct and sequel to the requirement definition provided by the business analyst associated with the BU. Requirement elicitation is required to be done not just for customer-initiated contract possibilities but also for pro-active product development. This elicitation is often required to be done onsite.)
  • 2. Develop and manage multiple project plans using senior developers and technical leaders for providing effort estimates & schedule estimates for all modules, in selecting & de-allocating staff, in preparing & presenting status reports to management and customers, in specifying and ordering the hardware/ licenses accompanying the deliverable and in undergoing progress reviews by management & customers (including onsite reviews. (The detailed specification of the hardware and software licenses will in many cases be done by the implementation support team and they will have to be provided facilitating inputs only)
  • 3. Propose high-level design of overall solution based on available requirements / specifications, review design documents prepared by the team and allocate module/sub-system level design effort within the team.
  • 4. Decompose and allocate work to senior developers. Get them to allocate further to junior developers, help them complete their work, and provide status when required in reviews.
  • 5. Where adequate technical leadership is not available, supervise developers in day-to-day activities involved in requirement management, design, coding, unit/ integration/ performance/ load testing, installation, documentation and support activities in-house and at customer site. Assign responsibilities for all the above tasks to senior or junior developers depending on task novelty, complexity and criticality
  • 6. Assure support to the Product Validation Group, through technical leaders and developers, in setting up the test environment, generating stubs, writing test cases or reviewing cases authored by PVG staff and executing tests
  • 7. Assign study and lead discussions to deepen understanding of applicable international standards, associated company products & required COTS, to ensure conformance to interfaces and other design requirements as applicable
  • 8. Interface and coordinate work with external agencies in joint development projects
  • 9. Plan installation activities and make work assignments.
  • 10. Conduct final review of user and technical documents before handing over to the technical documentation team
  • 11. Conduct selection interviews for potential new additions to the project team at A4-A7 levels.
  • 12. Provide SPOC support to the project team for liaison with the program management group. In case no program management support has been defined act as the SPOC for the product validation group, the business operations group, the support group, the process improvement group, the technical documentation group and other project / product development teams whose offerings are rolling into the deliverables. Use senior developers for support as needed.
  • 13. Manage team logistics in respect of customer interaction and travel. Address and manage inter-team and intra-team conflicts.
  • 14. Assure quality through process compliance during all phases of engineering (like requirements, design, coding, testing, installation, support and enhancements) particularly through reviews and proper documentation & version control of artifacts (like code, requirements, design, test plans) and through facilitation of SQA reviews.
  • 15. Participate in external audits -and occasionally internal audits- conducted for compliance checks.
  • 16. Manage releases by deciding when accumulated changes are adequate to warrant a new release of what category and also lead preparation of accompanying release documentation recording problems fixed & open and details of versions incorporated among other details.
  • 17. Handling of queries and complaints originating from the customers and received either directly or through the company support organization. (Usually first level of contact A7/A8, second level A9, and then A10)
  • 18. Collect, track and improve employee productivity and cost metrics
  • 19. Set annual performance goals for all team members and conduct appraisals. Use senior developers for support as required.
  • Pre-Sales
  • 1. Participate in preparation of technical proposals for customers. This includes estimation support at the pre-contract stage review of draft technical proposals and support during presentation of proposals to customers.
  • 2. Develop and present POC / demos to customers and prospects as required for showcasing company products.
  • 3. Help the customer through technical query resolution peripheral to the prime company deliverable. The customer could direct such queries to any member of the team irrespective of levels.
  • 4. Provide general support to customer reps through internal technical liaison during company visits
  • Others / Capability Building
  • 1. Organize training and support for new members joining the team through training and instruction on technology domain and project scope/content. Provide high-level exposure to company products, business and technology prior to scheduled orientation.
  • 2. Support other teams in the organization (-outside one's own group-) through knowledge transfer wherever they need it for developing products or customer solutions.
  • 3. Use the proximity with the customer to answer queries on feasibility of new features, collaborate with product managers in roadmap development and spot & share leads for deployment of other company products.
  • 4. Propose, or get senior developers to propose, design changes in the core processing elements of the product to prevent failures, to eliminate or reduce common problems or to improve the performance and load handling capability of the product. (Any team member can be invited to make suggestions in this regard for due consideration and assessment)
  • 5. Study new evolving standards, new technologies and explain them to team members for incorporation in their work. Create demonstration artifacts where necessary to confirm understanding.
  • 6. Direct search, evaluation, piloting and deployment of open source/freeware/ commercial tools that improve productivity and quality of the code assigned for development. (Anybody can propose but A8/9 will usually be expected to lead and close the action)
  • 7. Develop or enhance technical guideline documents, templates, checklists, tools and training initiatives cutting across projects and BUs to improve product quality. (Typically has a greater focus on technical processes then management processes)
